Many people who do regular yoga report increased feelings of well
being with reduction of depression and low mood but until a controlled
study is done, such reports are only anecdotal and not considered proof
by the medical profession.
A recent study reported in Psycho-Oncology in February 2009, showed that 10 weeks of Restorative yoga improved the mental outlook of women with breast cancer. In a controlled study of 44 women with or recovering from breast cancer, 22 women took part in regular Restorative yoga and the other 22 were in the control group, who did not practice yoga. Of the yoga group after ten weeks the majority reported an increase in their feeling of well being and a reduction of feelings of depression in comparison to the control group.
Restorative yoga is a gentle form of yoga which uses props like chairs, blankets and bolsters to allow people with disabilities and illness to enjoy the benefits of yoga. This can be used in a care setting and with the support of a yoga teacher, the best positions can be found for you. As you are supported in positions with walls and cushions it enables the person to experience deeper relaxation without fear of injury or falling. Many yoga teachers incorporate these positions into their relaxation portion of their practice or when a student has injuries or limitations. Many pregnant women continue with their yoga well into their final trimesters with the support and knowledge of their yoga teacher.
Although this particular study used restorative yoga there is no reason why other types of yoga will not have a similar positive mental effect as long as relaxation is incorporated into your routine. It is great to know that the effects of yoga are quickly felt, encouraging you to continue with your regular yoga practice or plan to start a yoga class.
