3 Tips to Make Sure That You Enjoy Your First Yoga Class

Yoga has become a very popular activity across the world and the increase in the number of studios opening up all over the place is a testament to this. Many people who would like to start taking classes feel a bit nervous and intimidated because they do not know what to expect. If you are new to yoga, there are things that you need to know to ensure that you enjoy the experience. There are tips that will help you to feel comfortable, confident and prepared when you turn up for your first class.

Avoid overeating before class

It is not a good idea to go to class on a full stomach. Trying to do yoga exercises right after your mealtime will hamper your practice. Trying to twist your body or hop into different poses can be almost impossible when your stomach is still trying to digest your heavy lunch. It is a good idea to eat at least one hour before and if you must eat something just before the class, a banana twenty minutes before class is adequate.

Get to class early

It is a good practice to get to class on time, but for your first class try to get there at least ten minutes early. This will give you time to get acquainted with the trainer and fill in any paperwork. Arriving early will also help you to choose the ideal location and to ask your yoga instructor any questions that you may have about the class.

The props you need

You will need a yoga mat but if you have not bought one yet, find out if the studio has some for rent. You also need to get any additional props that you may require such as a strap, block or blanket. Having the right props will make your first class more enjoyable by making it easier to practice while enhancing the relaxation. There are some accessories marketed for beginners such as gloves and socks, but these are not necessary and they do not really enhance your practice.

Before you sign for the yoga class, it helps to find out what to expect. In some of the best yoga classes there might be chanting at the end and beginning of the class. You should not feel the pressure to participate if you are not comfortable with it. Keep an open mind, but remember that you are there to get the best experience and stress will hamper your efforts, just relax and breathe!
